Notes on Jingles
Notes on jingles
Before creating my radio jingle I researched two radio jingles already on air. I did this to see how each jingle targets its audience, the elements and effects used within the jingle and also what information is portrayed.
The first jingle I listened to was the Chris Moyles show jingle on BBC radio one;
And the second was the BBC Radio Suffolk jingle.
· Target audience
-I think the target audience for the Chris Moyles show jingle is aged 16-24, it is a long, cheery jingle on at 6:30am, targeted at people ages 16-24 who are getting for, or on their way to work/ school.
-The age group targeted for the BBC radio Suffolk station is aged 30-50 years. In my opinion I think that when advertising jingles for an age group younger than 30 the jingle would have to be in more depth and more ‘fun’. The jingle is straight to the point and could be classified as ‘dull’ to anyone under this age.
· The elements of the jingle
- The Chris Moyles jingle is more like a song than a jingle. The same ‘snare’ beat caries on throughout the whole jingle. There was a sparkle effect used at the beginning of the jingle to introduce it.
- The BBC radio Suffolk jingle was very to the point and short. No effects were used except the background music used behind the words.
· Information portrayed
- The day and time the show is on. By giving us this information we (as the audience) know when to listen to the show and we also know the radio station as it mention ‘radio one’ as well as ‘Monday- Friday mornings’.
- We are given the Radio station name, however when a new presenter is coming on the show the jingle does have the presenters name following on from the jingle.
Radio Jingle Evaluation
Evaluation
For this assignment I had to create three different radio broadcasts using the logic pro software.
I had never used the software before, so I played with it a little before carrying out my first broadcast.
The first broadcast I did was a five second jingle introducing my radio station. I recorded the speech for my broadcast. “You’re listening to JJ on SNC live.” After recording this I connected the voice recording to an empty project on logic pro, I made sure I saved the empty project before doing anything else, then I dragged my speech over to the project.
Within logic pro there is a button called media, by clicking on that we can find ‘loops’ (already recorded sounds) then on loops I selected FX (effects). I listened to a few and decided I wanted to have am alarm clock at the beginning of my broadcast, I chose this because I think the an alarm clock will engage the audience and grab their attention. I had the alarm clock then speech, but wanted something else at the end, I went through the effects and decided a kiss noise would be effective to use, and it portrays my personality as well as engaging the targeted audience.
I listened to the jingle and was happy, but not completely I still felt like something was missing. I decided to use the ‘plug ins’ to add an effect. I lowered the pitch of the voice, and made it sound almost like an echo, or another person talking just slightly out of sync to the first voice. I was then happy with my first jingle, and also became more familiar with the software. Each different clip is set out on a different line, this makes it easier to add effects to just one clip. For example; when adding the effect to the voice, I clicked on the second line to add the plug in the whole line.
For my second broadcast task I was asked to create an advert, I worked with a partner. We came up with a script and imported that into a saved empty project to start with.
Next we looked for the sound effects that we needed for our script in the FX folder in the loops. We found the perfect sound effect for the start.
After importing that and the speech after we needed to download the song that we had chosen to be in our background. We chose ‘you’ve got a friend’ from Toy story. We found the song on you tube and converted the link in ‘video2mp3.net’ and downloaded the mp3 file. We then imported this into the file. The last piece of speech had an effect added. I changed the pitch of the speech and lowered it. The rest of the speech also had a plug in effect added, an echo was added to the rest of it. I listened to it over and decided I was happy with it.
My final broadcast was a promo. For this my partner and I came up with an idea of having a talk show like Jeremy Kyle, and doing a promo for that. This was the most complex of all jingles. We started by recording our speech and importing that into an empty project file. We then needed to find background music, we needed a rap instrumental so searched for one on youtube and also we wanted the theme tune music from Jeremy Kyle in the background, so that people knew what type of talk show it was. We downloaded both tracks form ‘video2mp3.net’ just like we did in the last task. I then added effects to change the pitch of the voices. Following on from this I imported my downloaded tracks, and cut them where needed. I also added effects from the loops to import between speech and songs. When listening to my almost finished promo, I realised it needed something else so I added the end of a song at the beginning to create the effect of a song finishing and the promo starting. Once this was complete I was happy with my finished piece.
Each of these jingles need to be ‘bounced’ when complete. (Bouncing is exporting) To do this we highlight the time line at the top of the screen from the start to the end of the jingle and click bounce. We save in a recognisable folder as an MP3 file, add to i-tunes and ensure the normalize button is ticked. When all is done it is time to bounce the file.
